WASHINGTON, D.C., December 5, 2011 The U.S. Grains Councils 2011 Corn Mission to Japan, China and Vietnam toured the Kushiro Port in Hokkaido, Japan, and heard firsthand the plans to expand the ports capacity to accommodate larger vessels. Kushiro is the largest port facility in the heart of Japans major dairy producing area Hokkaido, Japan. The Director of the Kushiro Port Office for Japans Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) Dr. Tetsuya Hayakawa explained to the group that the port Read more. WASHINGTON, D.C., November 29, 2011 The U.S. Grains Council announced that registration is now open for its 9th International Marketing Conference and 52nd Annual Membership Meeting to be held Feb. 13-15 in Panama City, Panama. Registration and additional details are available at www.grains.org by clicking on the meeting link on the right hand side of the page. The U.S. Grains Councils Japan office kicked off a series of major sorghum promotion efforts with a highly successful sorghum food symposium and tasting event. Sorghum has commonly been viewed and utilized as a livestock ingredient in Japan among other countries. Read more. Indias economic growth is now projected to fall below 8 percent this year, according to the latest forecast from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), which cited slowing growth in almost all sectors. However, industrial production and manufacturing are expected to grow by 7.5 percent, while mining and agriculture are forecasted to expand by 4.4 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively. Performance varies considerably among Indias food industries, reported U.S. Grains Council consultant Amit Sachdev. Aquaculture, for example, increased production by 40 percent in 2010/11, and India may see its seafood exports increase as a result. Read more. Traders have been offering Ukrainian feed wheat and corn to Taiwanese buyers, said Clover Chang, U.S. Grains Council country director. Ukrainian corn quotes are $13 to $25 less per metric ton than U.S. corn, but local buyers have generally not been satisfied with its quality. Despite quality concerns crude protein levels as low as 6.7 percent and foreign material as high as 14 percent -- some buyers are showing interest because of the lower price, and the first cargo of Ukrainian corn will reportedly arrive in Taiwan in the first half of December. In South Korea, critics say the pact could threaten South Koreas national interests, and opposition party members are attempting to block a vote in the parliament. Opposition is coming from South Koreas auto industry and farmers, who fear a flood of U.S. farm exports. South Koreas president said he will seek to renegotiate a provision that gives foreign investors the right to have international arbitrators hear a dispute in South Korea, and he has made a rare trip to parliament this week to argue for a vote. One of the recurring challenges stems from asynchronous approval, which arises when a major new market emerges with regulatory frameworks and timetables different from established protocols. Such a situation has recently arisen with regard to a new biotechnology trait, MIR 162 or Agrisure Viptera, marketed through Syngenta seed retailers and partners with hybrid numbers ending in 3110 and 3111. This trait is not yet approved for sale in China, which has recently emerged as a major new export market for U.S. corn. Sometimes it is best to let the facts speak for themselves.
